The Great Guadiana Route (GR15) is about 65 km’s long and covers the territory of Baixo Guadiana in Algarve. The route crosses three municipalities of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António and travels for sixteen locations that represent the typical characteristics of the «serra», the barrocal and the coast, with the ex líbris of the territory: Guadiana, the great river of the south. The start / end of the GR 15 is in Vila Real de Santo António and also has a connection point with Ecovia -, a green corridor with a length of 214 Km flagged towards Sagres. The route continues its path going to Castro Marim towards Monte Francisco, passes through the villages of Junqueira, Azinhal, Almada D’Ouro, Alcaria, Odeleite, Foz de Odeleite and enter the northeastern municipality of Alcoutim, in the mountain village of Corte das Donas where we begin the ascent of the river passing through the villages of Alamo, Guerreiros do Rio, Laranjeiras and Montinho das Laranjeiras to the Pontal Belvedere. GR15 keeps going to the village of Marmeleiro until you reach the town of Alcoutim, this in turn connected to the Via Algarviana (GR13 – with a length of 300 km and connects Alcoutim to Cabo de S. Vicente, crossing 11 municipalities in Algarve).
Landscape, heritage, ethnography, gastronomy, physical activity and fresh air is the secret of this great route that consolidates the provision of 19 pedestrian routes in Baixo Guadiana, approaching the coast to the interior.
